xTool D1 Pro + LightBurn Setup Guide

The xTool D1 Pro connects to LightBurn via USB. Import the official xTool-D1ProV3.lbdev config file from xTool's support centre — it sets the 430 × 390 mm work area, homing, scanning offsets, and S-value automatically. What you need before you start

LightBurn or xTool Creative Space? LightBurn is more capable (material library, camera alignment, rotary wizard, multi-machine support, Mac/Linux). xTool Creative Space (XCS) is simpler and free — it auto-detects the D1 Pro and needs no GRBL configuration. Step 1 — Install the CH340 USB driver

Before you plug in the D1 Pro, install the CH340 driver for your operating system. Without it, your computer sees an "Unknown device" and LightBurn cannot find the machine.

After installing, plug in the D1 Pro via USB. The machine should power on and the laser head should begin homing (moving to the rear-left corner). In LightBurn, the COM port will appear in the device bar at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2 — Import the xTool D1 Pro config file

xTool publishes an official LightBurn device file that configures all the machine-specific parameters in one step. Do not use File → Import Prefs — that path overwrites unrelated LightBurn settings and can break your existing configuration.

  1. Go to support.xtool.com and search for "D1 Pro LightBurn" to find the config file download page
  2. Download xTool-D1ProV3.lbdev
  3. In LightBurn, open Devices (the laser icon in the top toolbar, or Edit → Devices)
  4. Click Import and select the .lbdev file
  5. The D1 Pro appears in your device list. Select it and click OK
  6. Verify the work area shown in LightBurn matches your machine: 430 × 390 mm for the 20W, 430 × 400 mm for the 10W

The config file automatically sets: work area dimensions, homing direction (rear-left), S-value max (1000), scanning offset corrections, and the device profile. You should not need to enter any of these manually.

Step 3 — Enable laser mode: send $32=1

The single most common setup mistake with any GRBL diode laser is forgetting to enable laser mode. Some D1 Pro units ship with $32=0, which means the laser runs at constant power — burning extra-dark at every corner and direction change.

To open the console in LightBurn: click the small terminal icon at the top right, or go to Window → Console. Type each command and press Enter. GRBL replies with ok for each successful command.

These settings are stored in the D1 Pro's firmware flash memory and persist between sessions. You only need to set them once — unless you flash new firmware.

Verify with $$ — type $$ in the console to print all current GRBL settings. Scroll down to confirm $32=1, $30=1000, and $13=0. This is also useful for diagnosing problems reported on LightBurn's forum — always include your $$ output when asking for help.

Step 4 — Focus with the focal bar

The xTool D1 Pro uses a physical focal bar rather than a fixed focal length setting. The bar slides between the laser head and the material and physically positions the head at the correct focal distance — you do not need to measure or calculate anything.

  1. Place your material on the work surface
  2. Jog the laser head over the material using LightBurn's Move panel (or the arrow keys on the D1 Pro's control panel)
  3. Slide the included focal bar between the underside of the laser module and the top surface of your material
  4. Loosen the head height lock, lower the head until it gently rests on the focal bar, then re-tighten
  5. Remove the focal bar — the head is now at the correct focal distance

For cutting: focus on the surface (as above). For thick materials you want to cut through: some users focus slightly inside the material (raise the work surface by half the material thickness). This is an advanced technique — start with surface focus.

No focal bar to hand? The D1 Pro's focal bar is approximately 50 mm tall for the standard laser head. You can use a ruler or folded card of that thickness as a temporary substitute, or run a ramp test to find the sharpest focus point. See our diode laser focus guide for the ramp test method.

Lower the laser head until it rests on the focal bar with your material beneath it, tighten the lock, then slide the bar out. The head is now at the correct focal distance.

Step 5 — Frame and run your first job

Before you press Start on any job, use LightBurn's Frame function to preview the job boundary. The D1 Pro's positioning laser (the crosshair) traces the bounding box — you can see exactly where the job will land before it burns anything.

  1. Draw a 20 × 20 mm square in LightBurn (use the rectangle tool)
  2. Set mode to Fill, speed 3,000 mm/min, power 65% (good starting point for 3mm basswood at 10W)
  3. Place a piece of basswood or scrap wood in the work area
  4. Click Frame — the head traces the boundary with the positioning laser. Adjust position if needed
  5. Put on your OD7+ safety glasses
  6. Click Start
What to expect: at 65% power and 3,000 mm/min, a 10W D1 Pro leaves a medium-brown engrave on basswood — clear, crisp, and not charred. If it is very pale, increase power by 5%. If it is dark and charred, reduce power or increase speed. Run a full material test grid to find your machine's exact sweet spot.

How the D1 Pro modules differ (5W / 10W / 20W)

All three D1 Pro modules use the same GRBL parameters and LightBurn setup steps. The differences are in what each module can cut and engrave, not in software configuration.

Modules are interchangeable without any software change. If you upgrade from a 10W to a 20W head, keep the same LightBurn device profile — just re-focus with the focal bar (the focal distance is the same) and adjust your speed/power settings for the higher wattage.
