How to finish a laser-engraved cutting board for food safety

The finishing step is not optional — it seals the engraved grooves so that food particles and bacteria cannot lodge in them. This is a 5-step process.

  1. Let the board cool for 5 minutes. The wood is warm right after engraving. Handling it immediately can smear char into the surrounding grain.
  2. Sand the engraved area with 220320-grit sandpaper. Work gently over the engraved surface — you are smoothing the char edges and removing loose carbon, not reshaping the design. Wipe away the dust with a clean, dry cloth.
